TEN began working Rob McFarlane in 2022, to develop a fish farm model that could be replicated. Initially we are helping develop a pilot fish farm at TANU, near Soroti in Eastern Uganda (see photo of Rob and Joel). Since Rob moved away, we are continuing the work with James Muhairwe, found of Sands Fish Farm.

James is an expert in fish farming and trains others (including TEN Partners TANU in Soroti and U-Invest in Burundi). As well as farming fish, he supplies others with fingerlings, feed, equipment and low cost tanks.

The approach uses above ground tanks and is best suited to Catfish, which are especially resilient and have a strong local market.

The first pilot site, at TANU has now been built (see pic below) and the first fingerlings are growing fast. The site is expected to be at full capacity by the end of 2025. TANU will train students and income from the fish farm will help TANU's vocational training to be financial sustainable.

The aim is to develop partnerships between Sands, investors and operators so that the successful fish farming models can be replicated.

James is looking for equity partners to develop the business further, contact Jerry for latest information. He presented at a TEN Gathering, providing a useful introductory resource, see here.
